Troubleshooting Tips

If you have trouble logging on to SPIRE, our tips may help. Contact the OIT Help Desk (545-9400, option 2) if these suggestions do not resolve your problem.

Use the correct ID & password combination

Go to the SPIRE Logon page. Log on with your NetID (OIT Account user name) and password. Your NetID is a case-sensitive ID, based on your first and/or last name that you also use to log on to UMail.

Can't remember your ID?

Your NetID (OIT Account user name) is your primary user name for all OIT services. This is the same ID that you use to access UMail, UDrive, or the campus network. Your NetID is a case-sensitive ID based on your first and/or last name; it is not your Social Security Number, or your 8-digit ID from your UCard.

If you log on to SPIRE using the SPIRE Logon:

  • Instructors: An alphanumeric ID (e.g., AJDOE or ABSMITH2) that was mailed to your work address shortly after you became an instructor (this is no longer done for new instructors).
  • Staff: An alphanumeric ID (e.g., AJDOE or ABSMITH2) that you received after your SPIRE training (this is no longer done for new staff).

If you forget your NetID or SPIRE Logon, go to OIT Account Management (Room A113, LGRC, M-F, 8:30 a.m.- 4:45 p.m.) with a picture ID. Another option is to contact the OIT Help Desk (545-9400, option 2). For security reasons, OIT cannot share IDs via email or over the phone.

Can't remember your password?

If you forget your OIT Account password or SPIRE Logon password, go to OIT Account Management (Room A113, LGRC, M-F, 8:30 a.m.- 4:45 p.m.) with a picture ID. Another option is to contact the OIT Help Desk (545-9400, option 2). Again, for security reasons, OIT cannot share passwords via email or over the phone.

Use the Password Help area on the SPIRE Logon page (right side of the page) to retrieve your OIT Account password reminder or receive a temporary password.

What if I have two SPIRE accounts (a.k.a. roles)?

If you are an instructor or staff member, as well as a student, your NetID and password by default access instructor/staff account. To log on as a student, on the SPIRE Logon page enter your NetID and password, click the Use alternate role check box and then click Go.

If you are a student, and also have an on-campus job where you use SPIRE, your NetID and password by default access your SPIRE for staff account. Your SPIRE ID number and password (if you have that) by default accesses your student account. To log on as a student, on the SPIRE Logon page enter your NetID and password, click the Use alternate role check box and then click Go.

To change the default from instructor/staff to student, you can select your preferred SPIRE role and link your NetID with the SPIRE account of your choice.

Note: If your SPIRE roles were set up before January 2008, you can continue to use your 8-digit SPIRE ID to log on to your student account, and your alphanumeric SPIRE ID for your instructor/staff role. If you opt to use your NetID and password to log on to SPIRE, switch between roles using the Use alternate role check box.
