Sign Up & Manage Your Google Apps Account

Google Apps at UMass Amherst is a customized version of Google’s popular suite of online productivity and collaboration tools designed especially for educational institutions. More about Google Apps

  • For privacy and security resaons, Google Apps at UMass Amherst is currently available only to undergraduate students.
  • Students are not required to sign up for Google Apps.
  • Students are not required to use Google Mail (our version of Gmail) for their @student.umass.edu email. They can choose to have their email delivered to UMail and still use the other apps in the Google Apps suite.

Sign up for Google Apps

  1. Log on to SPIRE with your NetID and password.
  2. In the left Menu, go to OIT Accounts > Google Apps. The Sign Up for Google Apps page will open.
  3. On the Sign Up for Google Apps page:
    • Read the Conditions of Use, then select the check box next to I agree to the Conditions of Use….
    • Under Choose Where to Deliver your UMass Email, select Google Mail or UMail.
      Note: Before you make your selection, please read the important information on the screen highlighted in a blue box. You may change your email delivery preference at any time (see below for instructions).
    • Under Create a Google Apps Password (optional), in the Enter Password field, enter a Google Apps password, then enter it again in the Confirm Password field.
      Note: Creating a Google Apps Password is optional. The Google Apps Password is only used to access Google Mail using a mobile device or email software (e.g., Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird). You may create your password at a later date (see instructions below).
  4. Click Sign Up. The Save Confirmation page will open.
  5. On the Save Confirmation page, click OK to return to the My OIT Acccounts - Account List page.
  6. Now that you're signed up, go to apps.umass.edu to log in.

Manage Your Google Apps Account

After you sign up, use the Manage Your Account page to change your email delivery preference – or – set or change your Google Apps Password.

Change Your Email Delivery Preference

You may change where your @student.umass.edu email is delivered (UMail or Google Mail) at any time. Before you make your selection, please review the Conditions of Use and the important information on the screen highlighted in a blue box.

To change your email delivery preference:

  1. Log on to SPIRE with your NetID and password.
  2. In the left Menu, go to OIT Accounts > Google Apps. The Manage Your Account page will open.
  3. On the Manage Your Account page, under Change Your Email Delivery Preference, select either the Google Mail or UMail radio button.
  4. Click Save Changes. The Save Confirmation page will open.
  5. On the Save Confirmation page, click OK to go to the My OIT Accounts – Account List page.

Create or Change Your Google Apps Password

Use the instructions below to create a Google Apps password or change your Google Apps password if you’ve forgotten it.

Note: The Google Apps password is only used to access Google Mail using a mobile device or email software (e.g., Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird).

To create or change your Google Apps password:

  1. Log on to SPIRE with your Net ID and password.
  2. In the left Menu, go to OIT Accounts > Google Apps. The Manage Your Account page will open.
  3. On the Manage Your Account page, under Create/Change Your Google Apps Password, in the Enter Password field, enter a Google Apps password, then enter it again in the Confirm Password field.
  4. Click Save Changes. The Save Confirmation page will open.
  5. On the Save Confirmation page, click OK to go to the My OIT Accounts – Account List page.
  6. You'll use your Google Apps password when setting up email software (e.g., Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird) or a mobile device to access Google Mail. For instructions see the Google Web Site: Supported IMAP Client List.
