Find out if your advisee has requested extra privacy protection or if there is a hold (a.k.a. Service Indicator) on his or her record.
Privacy
Find out if your advisee has requested extra privacy protection. Note: Student privacy information is temporarily unavailable through the Advisor Center or My Advisees page. IF IN DOUBT, do not release any student's information to anyone except that student or a UMass employee with a need to know. See the instructions below for an alternative method to access privacy information.
- If you have SPIRE A access, you may navigate to the Student Services Center page (or have a staff member in your department who has SPIRE A access do this for you).
- On the Student Center tab:
- Look at the upper right corner of the page, after the 8-digit SPIRE ID and above the academics tab. If your advisee has requested extra privacy protection, you will see the FERPA flag (
). - Click the FERPA flag. The Releasable FERPA Directory Information page opens. Note: Do not release even so-called releasable information to anyone except the student, unless it is a normal part of your job.
- Look at the upper right corner of the page, after the 8-digit SPIRE ID and above the academics tab. If your advisee has requested extra privacy protection, you will see the FERPA flag (
- On the Releasable FERPA Directory Information page:
- View releasable directory information
- To view releasable academic information, click Releasable Academics.
- To view releasable attendance information, click Releasable Attendance.
- Click Return to go back to your advisee's Student Center.
Holds
Find out if your advisee has a hold, or negative service indicator, on his or her record. Note: The hold icon (
) is temporarily unavailable through the Advisor Center or My Advisees page. Please see the instructions below for an alternative method to view holds.
- In SPIRE, in the left menu, click Service Indicators > Student > Manage Service Indicators. The Manage Service Indicators search page opens.
- On the Manage Service Indicators search page, enter the 8-digit SPIRE ID or Last Name and First Name of your advisee, and click Search. Note: If your search criteria match multiple students, a list of names will appear at the bottom of the search page. Click the name of your advisee to access the Manage Service Indicators page for him or her.
- On the Manage Service Indicators page:
- View details of the hold.
