1. I use the appropriate anti-virus & anti-spyware software.
OIT provides anti-virus software at no cost to members of the University community. We recommend that you enable automatic and on-access scans, and run a full scan of your computer every month. Download & Install Anti-Virus Software
- I have the latest version of anti-virus software for my computer.
- My virus and spyware definitions get automatically updated.
2. My operating system is updated with the latest security patches.
To check for the latest updates for your operating system, go to:
- windowsupdate.microsoft.com (Windows)
- System Preferences > Software Update (Macintosh)
Enable automatic updates and your computer will receive critical patches as soon as they are released. Install Security Patches
3. My software is updated.
Software vendors routinely release patches that fix known vulnerabilities and security holes. Always update third-party software (e.g., Adobe) when prompted to do so. Make sure your Web browser is updated and use Secunia PSI to check for outdated programs on your computer.
4. My firewall is turned on.
Most operating systems have a built-in firewall that can block unauthorized access to your system. Make sure your firewall is always on and keep it up-to-date. For more information on firewalls, choose your operating system below:
5. I use strong passwords.
To beat password-guessing software:
- My passwords meet OIT’s rules for passwords.
- I change my passwords twice a year (with daylight savings).
- My OIT Account password is different from my other passwords.
6. My computer has a User Account & an Administrator Account.
Create a Limited User Account for everyday use and keep the Administrator access for special tasks (e.g., software installation). Learn how to set up User Accounts for Windows and Macintosh.
7. I use UMASS-SECURE1X for wireless on campus.
UMASS-SECURE1X is a more secure, convenient, and faster way to connect to the campus wireless network. To connect, you must first configure supplicant software on your computer. OIT provides supplicant software at no cost for Windows computers. Mac OS X users can configure the software built into the operating system. Connect to UMASS-SECURE1X
8. I have a laptop security cable.
Laptop security cables are available from most computer and office supply retailers. Remember to lock your door when you leave your (dorm) room or office.
9. I use a password-protected screen saver (or ‘lock’ the screen).
'Locking' the screen or using a password-protected screen saver helps you lock
your computer without shutting it down when stepping away from your desk. Press Ctrl + L to lock your Windows computer. For
more information, see our Information Security Tips.
10. I don’t store any sensitive information on USB drives.
Portable storage devices are easily lost. For grades, finances, and other important data, always use a secure storage space, such as UDrive.
11. I will leave no data on a computer I plan to recycle.
Tossing files into the Recycle Bin is not enough. To delete the contents of your computer, use one of the following:
- Stop by the OIT Help Desk (A109 LGRC Lowrise, M - F, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.).
- Use digital shredding software. Common applications include Eraser, Darik’s Boot and Nuke (DBAN) and Active@KillDisk. Note: These applications will permanently erase the contents of your hard drive. OIT does not support digital shredding software at this time.
- Use Disk Utility (Mac OS X only). To access Disk Utility, go to Applications > Utility.
12. I frequently clear my private data from Web browsers
Web browsers often store information from the Web sites you visit for future reference. This information includes cookies, the browser’s history and cache, any stored passwords, etc. Clear this information often or set up your browser to do it automatically, especially if you use a public or shared computer. Check your browser’s Help section for instructions on how to clear your private data.
13. I follow OIT's tips for my operating system.
Security requirements change frequently and are not easy to remember. For more in-depth information about how you can secure your computer, check our security tips for Windows and Macintosh. Security Tips for Windows 2000, XP & Vista | Security Tips for Mac OS X
